Chromium and nickel-bearing alloys — 300 series, 400 series, and specialty stainless grades.
📅 Last Updated: May 2026
About Stainless Steel Melting Scrap
Stainless steel scrap is an actively traded ferrous category, with material value driven by the chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content of the alloys. The grades break naturally into two large families — the chromium-only 400 series, and the chromium-nickel 300 series, with 304 and 316 being the most common variants — and a number of more specialised alloys.
The trade moves through specialist yards equipped with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysers, which read the elemental composition of incoming material on the spot. This identification is important because the value of stainless scrap depends heavily on its nickel content, and the price difference between grades is meaningful.
Principal Grades
The principal grades of stainless steel melting scrap, as defined in the ReMA specifications:
304 Stainless (18-8)
The most common stainless grade — 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Used in kitchenware, food processing, and architectural applications.
316 Stainless (18-10-2)
18% chromium, 10% nickel, 2% molybdenum. Higher corrosion resistance than 304. Used in marine, chemical, and medical applications.
Stainless Solids (300 Series)
Mixed solids of the chromium-nickel grades.
Stainless Turnings (300 Series)
Machining turnings, with or without oil/coolant.
400 Series Stainless
Chromium-only stainless — typically 410, 430. Magnetic, used in automotive exhaust and decorative trim.
310 / 309 Stainless
Higher-chromium, higher-nickel heat-resistant grades.
17-4 PH Stainless
Precipitation-hardening stainless alloy.
Duplex Stainless (2205, 2507)
Mixed austenitic-ferritic stainless with high strength and corrosion resistance.
